Emily Hanako Momohara creates artwork and films that center around issues of social justice, immigration and multiculturalism. Growing up as part of a mixed-race family heavily influenced her creative practice.
She has exhibited internationally, most notably at the the Japanese American National Museum in a two-person show titled Sugar/Islands. She has exhibited locally at the Contemporary Art Center, 21c Museum Hotel and the Aaronoff Center Weston Gallery. Her social justice billboards have been presented by For Freedoms, United Photo Industries and Photoville NYC. She has been a visiting artist at several residency programs including the Center for Photography at Woodstock, Headlands Center for the Arts, Fine Arts Work Center and Red Gate Gallery Beijing. Her work was included in the Chongqing Photography and Video Biennial and she was part of the 2022 Feminist Art Project. Momohara’s first documentary film Namba: a Japanese American’s Life of Incarceration and Resilience was released in 2022.
Momohara lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland where she is Professor and Chair of Media Arts at MICA.
